The NBA season begins this week and one of the initial matchups pits Jayson Tatum and the Boston Celtics (0-0) against Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks (0-0). The game tips off at 7 p.m. ET on October 25 from Madison Square Garden in New York City.

ESPN will unveil its new top broadcast team of Mike Breen, Doris Burke, and former NBA coach Doc Rivers for the Eastern Conference showdown. After falling one game short of the NBA Finals, the Celtics will again be one of the top teams in the East, especially after adding Jrue Holiday. The Knicks, on the other hand, are out to prove that their run to the second round of the playoffs a season ago was no fluke.

Here is what you need to know:

BOSTON CELTICS

Last season: 57-25, lost to Heat in Eastern Conference finals.

Coach: Joe Mazzulla (2nd season with Celtics, 57-25)

What to expect: The Celtics didn’t stand pat after coming up a game short last season of making back-to-back trips to the NBA Finals. Instead, Boston was one of the busiest teams this offseason. It started when the team did what was previously unthinkable and shook up its core, trading defensive specialist Marcus Smart, reigning Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon and big man Robert Williams III in a flurry of activity that netted it 7-footer Kristaps Porzingis and five-time all-defensive selection Jrue Holiday. It’s created a win-now mentality and a formidable top 6 anchored by All-Stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, who inked the richest contract in NBA history in July. They should get plenty of support backed by Holiday, Porzingis, Derrick White and veteran Al Horford. There’s also been tweaks on the sideline, with sophomore coach Joe Mazzulla adding assistants Charles Lee and Sam Cassell. It all again makes the Celtics one of the favorites to come out of a stacked Eastern Conference.

Departures: G Marcus Smart, G Malcolm Brogdon, F Grant Williams, C Robert Williams III, F Blake Griffin.

Additions: G Jrue Holiday, C Kristaps Porzingis, F Jordan Walsh, F Oshae Brissett.

Player to watch: Tatum. The 25-year-old is coming off a season that included a fourth straight All-Star selection and career averages in points (30.1), rebounds (8.8) and assists (4.6). But it wasn’t enough to help his team get over the hump to capture a championship. He’s added almost 20 pounds in the offseason and president of basketball operations Brad Stevens got him a natural point guard in Holiday who should be able to put the team in better situations late in games. Still, ultimately it will be Tatum who must become the on-court and vocal leader for this group if Boston plans on raising banner No. 18.

An Eastern Conference Atlantic battle is on tap on Wednesday as the New York Knicks will host the Boston Celtics to start their respective 2023-2024 campaigns. Tip off is scheduled at 7:00 p.m. ET on October 25th at Madison Square Garden.

This game could come down to steals, as neither team did well in that area last year. The Knicks were ranked 25th overall, having averaged an unimpressive 6.4 per game. The Celtics, meanwhile, were ranked 27th with 6.4 per game.

Looking back to last season, the Knicks finished on the right side of .500 (47-35), and they're hoping to kick off an even more successful campaign this year. Similarly, the Celtics had a phenomenal run, finishing with a superb 57-25 record.

The Knicks are hoping to beat the odds on Wednesday, as the experts think they're headed for a loss. They finished last season with a 45-35 record against the spread.

The Knicks came out on top in a nail-biter against the Celtics when the teams last played back in March, sneaking past 131-129. Do the Knicks have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Celtics turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.

President of basketball operations Brad Stevens made some difficult decisions this past summer, sending out Malcolm Brogdon, Marcus Smart, Grant Williams and Robert Williams III in trades. He brought in Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis to play alongside Jaylen Brown, Al Horford, Jayson Tatum and Derrick White, giving the Celtics an elite top six.

But there will be challengers in the Eastern Conference, including the Knicks, who will face the Celtics in their season opener. New York is hoping to build off a strong finish in 2022-23, as it went 17-8 after acquiring Josh Hart at the trade deadline.
